The Open Mic Project: Victory

Deborah Victory. Photo courtesy Rosie Lindsey. A writer, painter, novelist, parent, and poet, Victory’s accomplishments represent the triumph of the artist over the threats posed by self doubt. Born in Irving, Texas, the self described “shy little thing” with the social anxiety eventually came out of her shell, finding her footing through poetry and the art of the spoken word. An appearance at a local open mic, and subsequent encouragement from host Clebo Rainey, were the beginnings of an ever more confidently executed series of performances and successes, leading to ever greater accomplishments and artistic development, and, ultimately to participation in poetry competitions on the local, regional and national levels. Since those early successes, Victory has continued to sharpen her writing and open mic skills through appearances at the Dallas Poetry Slam, Fort Worth Poetry Slam, The Poetry Grind, the Southwest Shootout, and the National Poetry Slam, where in 2004 she helped carry the Dallas Slam team to a third place showing at the national competition in St. Louis. She has appeared on radio, and has been a regular at various spoken word events, including Johnny O’s Mad Swirl open mic and the Lost Art Open Mic held at Bill’s Records.

Having lived in Texas all of her life, Victory nevertheless spent much of her early years traveling across the American Southwest. She credits the picturesque scenery and awe inspiring vistas from those days with providing inspiration to her as an artist, but she gives equal importance to the little things, the small details to be seen that are so often overlooked yet which are equally magical and equally poetic. Possessed of a drive to do and to create ever since she was a little girl, she has never ceased giving full expression to her artistic ideals, and she continues to nurture the artist within through her poetry as well as through various other endeavors. She specializes in painting and graphic design, having done occasional freelance and contract work as a graphic artist and copywriter. Victory’s work has appeared in four self published collections as well as on compact disc and DVD as part of the Dallas Slam Team. She is also the author of several short stories which she hopes to publish soon.

“I am always deeply grateful for the creative, colorful people that I am surrounded by. It keeps life interesting.”
