Album Comparisons: Rock 'N Soul Part 1
Daryl Hall & John Oates are one of the most successful rock and roll duos of all time, enjoying a string of hits running from the mid-'70s through the mid-'80s with their signature adult contemporary/soft rock and "blue-eyed soul" sound. One of their hits ("Maneater") is in fact one of the songs I most remember from my youngest years. Rock 'n Soul Part 1, originally released in 1983, represents an essential collection of their earlier work for the more casual fan, with only the omission of "Out of Touch" from the following year's Big Bam Boom keeping this from being - for me, at least - the definitive Hall & Oates collection. The initial compact disc release from 1985 never quite hit the mark, sonically. How does the remaster from 2006 compare?

And the winner is: 2006 remaster. Despite the limiting employed on the remaster, everything is audibly much cleaner and clearer, something which will be immediately apparent to anyone accustomed to the sound of the earlier release or in fact to any Hall & Oates CD releases from the 1980s and '90s. From the very first notes of the drum intro on opening track "Say It Isn't So," through to the fade out of the audience on "Wait for Me (live version)," the remaster represents such a dramatic sonic improvement over the original that it wins this contest hands down, and without the reservations I usually have over louder remasters. The 1985 disc sounds half a dozen generations removed from the master tapes by comparison. I just wished they'd kept the original levels intact on the remaster, which would have made it the most definitive release of this material that we'd likely ever see. Still, no contest here whatsoever.
