\r\n\r\nTwo months ago I came across an unusual find while browsing through online auctions. That find was an antique wedding invitation, originating from my hometown of Dallas and dating to the late 19th century. A quick look at the card showed the location for the upcoming ceremony to be 334 Elm Street, an address familiar to me as the site of a well-established 1800s photography studio downtown. A second, closer look revealed the advertised bride to be the daughter of W. Wirt Williams, a name associated with nineteenth century Dallas photography and whose most well known studio was located at the 334 Elm address. I immediately recognized the wedding invitation as an item of interest as part of my ongoing early Dallas photography blog series<\/a>.\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\nI've covered W. Wirt Williams in greater detail in a previous post<\/a>, but to recap, Williams's career as photographer dated back to the mid-1850s, when he produced daguerreotype portraits in the town of New Braunfels, Texas. He subsequently operated photography parlors in Houston and potentially other cities in Texas before putting down roots in Dallas by 1889. The 334 Elm Street location at the corner of Sycamore (later Akard) Street was his base of operations from around 1890 through 1898, serving not only as his commercial studio but also as his home (a common practice for commercial photographers at the time). As seen on the invite card, it was at this home that the marriage of his daughter Emma to her fianc\u00e9 Will I. Melugin was to take place.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\nWho was William I. Melugin? I did some digging and discovered he was the second son of William Taylor Melugin, a Methodist minister who served as pastor and later as presiding elder in both Lampasas and Naples, Texas. Exactly how he and Emma Williams made their initial acquaintance is unknown, but the Dallas Morning News<\/i> recorded their license to marry in a published announcement on May 31, 1893. Per the wedding invite, the ceremony took place on that same day at the Williams home\/photographic studio at what is today 1502 Elm Street. Available society pages do not record the names of the invitees or the number of guests who attended, but given the residential setting, it's probably safe to assume the affair was an intimate one, or, given the success of the studio, that it was probably attended by a number of important local names of the day. Sometime following the wedding, the Melugins moved to Lampasas.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\nThe marriage was ultimately a short one. After settling in Lampasas, Will and Emma had two children together, Lucille Eleanore Melugin in February 1897 and Will James Claire Melugin in November 1898. The 1900 U.S. Census suggests there was a third child who did not survive, but this is not corroborated by any other historical sources I've identified. By 1898 the Melugin family was living in Cleburne, with Will working as a conductor for the Santa Fe Railroad. Will's death on April 26, 1899 at the age of 31, following a weeks-long battle with meningitis, left the then 28 year old Emma a widow. By the time of the 1900 Census, Emma was the owner of a rooming house in Cleburne, living with not only her two children but also with her parents, W. Wirt and Eleanor Williams; her older (unmarried) sister Sallie; and her brother-in-law James Henry Melugin, Will's older brother. In April 1905, James became the second Melugin to tie the knot with Emma.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n

\r\nThere is no dramatic or exceptional end to this story. W. Wirt Williams died in January 1905, three months before Emma's marriage to James. The marriage lasted until October 1912, when Emma died at the age of 42; the two Melugin-Williams marriages lasted a combined total of less than fourteen years. James Melugin, a brakeman for the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, subsequently married Ella Banks, with whom he had one daughter, and died in April 1941 from hypostatic pneumonia. All of the aforementioned, as well as Will I. Melugin, were buried in Cleburne Memorial Cemetery. Aside from the elder Williams, none of these individuals or their descendants entered the photography business, ensuring that the Williams family photographic legacy died with W. Wirt in 1905. The 1893 wedding invitation provides a small glimpse into the family life of a Dallas photographic pioneer.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
