Live Performance Photography
Live performance photography used to be my life. Not really, but it was my principal type of photography for several years. Photographing a live show is challenging. Framing a shot is often difficult because of movement in the crowd and movement onstage. The lighting is constantly changing, and low light levels make getting adequate exposure a challenge. Often the lighting will change dramatically from very low to very bright intensity, or change color, or a performer will move and throw off your focus or stray outside the frame, or someone in the crowd will suddenly get in the way and ruin the shot. Patience and attentiveness are prerequisites, and setting the shutter to [burst mode] and learning to shoot in manual mode are necessary skills of the trade. You must also be ready to accept the fact that a high percentage of shots may not come out the way you intended. In the end, though, the results can sometimes be extremely satisfying.

This area of the site showcases some of what I've captured in the time since my first experience photographing a live show in March 2007.
