Queen - News of the World
Album Comparisons: News of the World
Little needs to be said about Queen's towering influence in the rock world. Classic cuts such as "We Will Rock You," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," "Under Pressure," "Stone Cold Crazy," and the (in my opinion overrated), massively overplayed opus "Bohemian Rhapsody" continue to blow up the airwaves decades after their original releases, and provided inspiration to acts as diverse as Metallica, George Michael, Trent Reznor, and even Seal. News of the World hails from the era in which Queen was still more rock than pop and includes some radio and stadium favorites among its offerings. While there have been multiple releases on compact disc, the two most notable ones have been the 1991 Hollywood Records remaster and the massive 2017 40th Anniversary Edition with a full two discs' worth of bonus outtakes and rarities. Which is the best from a sonic and listening perspective? NOTE: The version of the original News of the World album that's included with the box set is identical to the earlier 2011 remastered edition, so the following comparison applies to that earlier release as well.

And the winner is: 1991 Hollywood remaster. News of the World ranks as my overall favorite Queen album, with some of the best "deep cuts" to be found in their catalog. John Deacon makes his debut as songwriter with the excellent "Spread Your Wings;" Roger Taylor's "Fight form the Inside" is a good, straightforward rocker with a cool guitar riff; and penultimate cut "It's Late" ranks as one of my favorite ever Queen songs from any era. The 40th anniversary edition of the album comes with a full complement of bonus tracks, everything from alternate takes to BBC session recordings, backing tracks, instrumental versions, radio edits, and live performances. This alone make the package worthwhile for hardcore fans, as long as they're willing to pay the high prices commanded for it in the secondhand market. For those who only want the original album, however, there is little actual new material to be found here, as all bonus tracks save for one are variations of the original eleven first released in 1977. The lone exception is "Feelings Feelings," a Brian May-penned number which was left off the original album and has since only surfaced on disc in the version included with the anniversary release, which is take number ten. From a listening perspective, the 1991 issue of News of the World remains the definitive version on CD, with top notch sound and all dynamics intact, from an era in which "remastered" didn't mean "brickwalled to hell."
