The Open Mic Project: Shanna Hale
A well-beloved figure in the Dallas performance arts community, Shanna Hale has gained notoriety for her poetry and for her signature dramatic monologues. Beginning at Café Bliss in 1995, she has performed her work at venues across the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, including the Insomnia Coffee Bar, Bill’s Records and Tapes, Paperbacks Plus, and the Mochalux Coffee House readings hosted by Paul Sexton. Her poems have seen publication in several anthologies, and she self-published one collection of her work, entitled To the World, My Sins and Confessions, in 2003. That same year, she was designated as an alternate in the Writer’s Garret Acting Out! competition with her signature piece “Broken Toys.” In 2010, she won an honorable mention at the Weatherford College Books N Authors and All That Jazz competition for her short story “Sanctuary.”
Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Shanna settled in Texas at the age of four, and has been writing since the fifth grade. In 2008, she completed her first novel, The Danger of Falling, a series of magic realism stories based on the original (uncensored) fairy tales. Later projects included a crown of sonnets and an additional collection of her work. She is a member of the Eagle Mountain Writers Workshop and currently makes her home in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.
